Project  title: New approaches in designing polymer surfaces with controllable pattern for applications in biomedicine and high technologies

Acronym : PIPATT

Project code:  PNII-RU-TE-2014-4-2976

Project no.: 256/1.10.2015

Project leader : Dr. Andreea Irina Barzic

Contracting authority : Executive Agency for Higher Education Research, Development and Innovation Funding

Contractor : "Petru Poni" Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry  -Iasi

Project period : 1.10.2015 – 30.09.2017

Total budget : 550 000 lei

                              90 000 lei  - stage 2015

                            284 391 lei - stage 2016

                            175 609 lei - stage 2017

Project activities are focused on the following research directions:

- creation of polymer surfaces with controllable structuring by specific techniques

- elaboration of a new method of surface structuring that provides the ability to control the morphological features of the desinged texture

- testing of the ability of the textured surfaces to induce uniform alignment  or liquid crystals

- investigation of cytotoxicity, adhesion and posibilities of controlled growth of some cells on the structured polymer support

The estimated results of the project are:

- obtaining of biocompatible polyimides from alicyclic monomers

- preparation of polyimide films with controllable surface texture depending on the applied techique of structuring

- design of polymers with suitable morphology for alignment of liquid crystals

- realization of polymer surfaces with proper anisotropy for cell growth

The project is focused on obtaining and processing of some  transparent polyimide films, with new structures, obtained by novel techniques in order to obtain scaffolds with controlled structure of the morphology for liquid crystal alignment layers and target growth cells.

The project brings new contributions in the polyimide surface structure. The novelty is reflected by obtaining new polyimide structures with biocompatible character and investigating issues related unstudied processing techniques that can contribute significantly to improvements in surface structure. Texturing methods will lead to materials with advanced morphological properties as required technologies and applications in tissue engineering.
